BUET closed indefinitely
Dhaka: The authorities on Thursday closed Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) for an indefinite period following a violent student movement demanding deferment of examinations.
The announcement came from an emergency meeting chaired by the university vice-chancellor professor Mahmud Manawarul Islam at about 12:00noon.
BUET public relations office director Shah Alam said the authorities decided to close the university as students vandalised administration building, blocking the roads linked to the university on Tuesday night. Some teachers were held hostage on 23 June.
Shah Alam said the authorities directed the students to vacate the dormitories by 5:00pm.
The scheduled examinations of different semester were to begin from 27 June. The students vandalised a university building as the authorities denied to accept students’ demand for the deferment of examinations.
