Dhaka: Bangladesh and Denmark have decided to cooperate with each other to counter the global threats of terrorism and violent extremism.

The two countries also agreed to keep working together in the areas of mutual interest, including green growth, climate change, development and trade and investments.

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and his Danish counterpart Kristian Jensen agreed on these areas during their meeting held in Copenhagen on Monday.

The two ministers commended the longstanding friendly relationship between Bangladesh and Denmark which started immediately after Bangladesh’s independence, according to Danish Embassy in Dhaka.

This relationship has further been strengthened recently through the signings of a three-year strategic sector cooperation and five-year development cooperation between the two countries.

The strategic sector cooperation focuses on improving the occupational safety and health standards in Bangladesh, especially in the readymade garments sector.

The development cooperation is designed to address Bangladesh’s development needs in line with Sustainable Development Goals and its national 7th Five-Year Plan.

Minister Ali visited Danish companies and met business leaders to exchange views on how to consolidate the existing partnerships and generate new ideas to increase bilateral trade and investment.

The Danish minister encouraged Bangladesh to benefit from Danish experience and expertise to accelerate progress, including green growth and green energy.

Mahmood Ali emphasised the need for developing a mutually agreed framework on partnership for 2030 agenda for sustainable development.

Both ministers agreed to explore new avenues to improve commercial relations and further encourage public private partnerships.

The two ministers agreed to establish a formal mechanism of regular dialogue between the two countries and accordingly, hold the first Foreign Office Consultations in Copenhagen.

They also discussed other key issues of mutual concern, including migration, security, and human rights.

Minister Ali’s visit to Denmark will continue till Tuesday as part of his tour to the Nordic countries.
