While Panel to boycott Saturday’s DU senate meeting
Dhaka: The panel of Dhaka University's pro-BNP-Jamaat teachers, White Panel, has announced to boycott Saturday's special senate meeting of the university convened to elect a three-member panel for the appointment of the university's vice-chancellor.
White Panel Convener Prof Akhter Hossain Khan announced the decision at a press conference at the DU Teachers' Club on Friday.
Panel joint convener Prof Morshed Hasan Khan, and DU senate members ABM Obaidul Islam and Lutfur Rahman were also present at the press conference.
In a written statement, Prof Akhter said around 50 posts of the senate out of total 105 are now lying vacant. "The selection of the VC panel won't be democratic without the participation of 50 members, especially 25 registered graduates," he said.
The DU registrar issued a letter on July 16 which said the DU VC convened a special senate meeting at 4 pm on July 29 to form a three-member panel for the appointment of the VC by the university chancellor.
Later, 15 registered graduates filed a writ petition with the High Court challenging the legality of the letter.
Following the writ, the High Court on Monday stayed the special senate meeting.
However, the Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the HC order, clearing the way for holding the special senate meeting.
