AR Rahman is one of the best music directors in the country right now. He put Indian Cinema on the world map by winning the Oscars in 2009, for the critically acclaimed Slumdog Millionaire. He made an entire generation realise that music is not bound by religion, caste, language or other similar barriers.

A few days ago, netizens had trolled and criticised the legendary musician for imposing Islam on the women in his family, and forcing them to wear a burkha. However, he took to Twitter to clarify that the people in his family have the choice to wear whatever they want and nothing is imposed on them.

The tweet from him read, ‘The precious ladies of my family Khatija ,Raheema and Sairaa with NitaAmbaniji #freedomtochoose’ (sic)

Along with this, was attached a picture from the 10 years of Slumdog Millionaire event. It had Khatija Rahman wearing a Burkha, while the other two ladies— Raheema and Sairaa were seen without it. Rahman indirectly clarified that wearing a Burkha is the choice of the women and he is not imposing anything.

Soon after this, Khatija Rahman wrote an explanation on her Facebook wall, clarifying her stance on this issue: ‘The recent conversation of myself on stage with my dad has been doing the rounds although I didn’t expect such an overwhelming response. However, there were certain comments which said that this attire is being forced by my dad and that he has double standards. I would like to say that the attire I wear or the choices I make in my life does not have anything to do with my parents. The veil has been my personal choice with complete acceptance and honour. I’m a sane mature adult who knows to make my choices in life. Any human being has a choice to wear or do what he/she wants and that’s what I’ve been doing. Hence, kindly don’t make your own judgements without understanding the exact situation. #freedomofchoice’ (sic).
