Dhaka: Washiqur Rahman Babu, a blogger, was hacked to death by miscreants in Tejgoan industrial area, Dhaka.

Police said miscreants attacked him at Dipika intersection of the area at about 9:45am on Monday.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital physicians declared Washikur dead after taking to the hospital.

‘He was brutally hacked to death with big knives just 500 yards (460 metres) from his home at the Begunbari area,’ reports AFP quoting the local police chief Wahidul Islam.

‘He worked at a non government organisation. We have come to know that he used to write on a blog. It has not been known clear yet in which blog Washikur used to write and what he used to write about,’ said police.

'It appeared Washiqur used to write using a penname Kutshit Hasher Chhana (Ugly Duckling),' Imran H Sarker, head of Blogger and Online Activists Network in Bangladesh, told AFP.

'He was a progressive free thinker and was against religious fundamentalism,' he said.

Police detained two men, Jikrullah and Ariful Islam, for their suspected involvement in the murder and recovered three machetes from the spot.

Earlier on 26 February 2015, blogger Avijit Roy was hacked to death by unidentified persons on Dhaka University campus.

Attackers also hacked and wounded Avijit’s wife Rafida Ahmed Banya who was accompanying him at the time of attack.

Avijit is the founder of Bangla blog ‘Mukto Mona’ and is a writer. He is the son of former Dhaka University physics professor Ajoy Roy. The professor visited DMCH after the incident.

Prominent writer and Dhaka University professor Late Humayun Azad was also hacked by the assailants at DU area when he was going home after visiting Ekushey Book Fair on 27 February 2004.

In the similar manner, on 15 February 2013, blogger Rajib Haider was killed in Pallabi allegedly for his write-ups in the blog.
